As we begin 2017, a global review of the increasing threat from ransomware has not just revealed that the threat from ransomware is growing substantially, but that the UK was being targeted more than anywhere else.
In a recent incident I’ve had to deal with when driving through Manchester, I’m only too familiar with ransomware. Fortunately, I was on my iPhone and the image I tried to open, could only be opened on a desktop. At this moment, I clicked and realised I was dealing with Ransomware Criminals.
Here at 3C, we’ve asked the question, how has the threat of ransomware been evolving in 2016? And how are they moving forward in? To help you get a better sense of the current state of ransomware, we've collected data from 2016 ransomware statistics and we will share the results within this blog.
The previous 12 months saw that nearly 50% of organisations have been hit with Ransomware. A survey that took place in June 2016 shows that almost one out of every two participants indicated their organisation has suffered at least one ransomware attack in the past 12 months. In addition, only 4% of respondents from the U.S. said that they were confident in their business’ current security ability to prevent a future attack!
Now, in 2017, we can see that prevention measures are still lacking because in October there was once again a 13% increase in Ransomware. UK users appeared to be insulted the most according to new stats. Malware continued its inexorable rise in October with the number of attacks growing by 5% more than the previous month. The vendor’s global theatre index also showed a 5% increase in active malware families, highlighting the constant evolving threat.
